Frank Hendry - Liverpool Waterfronts: A Memorial

Liverpool artist, Frank Hendry, captured the heritage and maritime traditions of Liverpool's waterfront in his oil paintings with his vibrant interpretation of the life along the Mersey River.

Biography of Frank Hendry

Influenced by his memories of the war years, when he served in the RAF, at one time as a Glider Pilot, Frank's paintings of the Blitz give a heartful understanding of the subject.

After the war Frank studied at Trinity College, Dublin and later worked as a journalist and then a lecturer.

A visit to Florence gave Frank his first inspiration to put brush to canvas, and on his return to Liverpool he visited Jacksons where he sought advice and obtained his first art supplies.

Then, from a postcard, Frank painted the River Arno and the Pont Vecchio, and from that day onwards, painting became a way of life.

Acquiring a pass to the docks, Frank became a well-known figure, sketching and recording images now long gone, using the bonnet of his car as his easel. Years later, these images are reproduced in Frank's work, reminding us of the rich heritage of our bygone past.
